Bertine J. Mertens Bertine J. Mertens, 89 of Luxemburg died early Wednesday morning, July 15, 2015. She was a devoted follower of Jesus, loved connecting to people through countless ways such as her Constant Rummage Store and crocheting hats for preemies. Bertine was born January 25, 1926 in Namur to the late John B. and Elizabeth (Destree) Englebert. On September 12, 1944 she married Richard H. Mertens at St. Mary of the Snows Church, Namur. Together they farmed in the Rio Creek area until retirement, later moving to Luxemburg. Survivors include her husband of 70 plus years, Richard H. Mertens, and their three children, Jane (Martin) Pranga, Chicago; Jack (Carol) Mertens, Kewaunee; Bob (Rita) Mertens, New Franken; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alvina Matzke, Manitowoc; Eunice Gauger, Sturgeon Bay; nieces and nephews. Bertine was preceded in death by one brother and one sister in law, George (Mayme) Englebert; four sisters and four brothers in law, Dolores Englebert, Irene Englebert, Ruth (Eli) Malfroid, Dorothy (John) Challe, Ruben Matzke, Orville Gauger. As per Bertine's request her funeral was private, and was held at the McMAHON FUNERAL HOME, LUXEMBURG on Saturday morning, July 18, 2015. www.mcmahonfh.com
