Harold J. Lumaye

August 27, 1945 — November 2, 2023

Harold Joseph LuMaye, 78, of Luxemburg, died Thursday morning, November 2, 2023, after a 19 month battle with lung cancer surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was born on August 27, 1945, at the family farm to August and Adeline (Tassoul) LuMaye. On August 31, 1968, Harold married the love of his life, Judith A. Marchant at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Green Bay. Together they shared 55 years of marriage and two daughters, Debbie and Kim. They spent most of their married life in Two Rivers, Wisconsin and moved to Luxemburg in 2007 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In 1963, Harold graduated with the inaugural class of Southern Door High School. He began his 28 year military career when he enlisted in the US Navy where he served a tour of Vietnam from 1965 - 1966 aboard the Navy destroyer USS Harold J. Ellison. A little emphasized fact of that cruise was that the fleet to which Harold’s destroyer was attached was the very first east coast contingent of the Navy fleet to go to Vietnam. During that cruise Harold entered the Panama Canal, crossed the International Dateline, the Equator and traveled around the world stopping in various ports of call such as Hong Kong and Rome. In the summer of 2017, Harold was proud to have been selected to travel to Washington, D.C. aboard the Vietnam Era Honor Flight out of the EAA Convention. In retirement, he enjoyed attending the USS Harold J. Ellison yearly reunions with Lawrence Jandrin, Don Lautenbach and James Butterbaugh. Upon their return home, events of those reunions were rarely discussed with non-military personnel. After active duty, Harold continued his career in the US Navy Reserves until 1978 when he enlisted in the US Army Reserves where he served in the 377th Maintenance Company as a Motor Pool Sergeant and First Sergeant. He had many lifelong friends from his service in the Army and enjoyed the time spent with them each year at the 377th reunions. Once his military service was complete, Harold continued to serve his fellow comrades and community members in various military and community service organizations including the VFW, DAV, and Lions Club. Harold was a devoted and protective husband, father and grandfather. In his younger years, he worked two and three jobs simultaneously so Judy could remain at home to raise their two girls. He was employed at Hamilton Industries, LaFond’s Service Station and retired from Manitowoc Equipment Works/Manitowoc Ice where he was a spot welder helping to manufacturer ice machines seen in restaurants and hotels. However, the joy of his life was his three grandchildren who he shamelessly spoiled. Harold enjoyed traveling and he was proud to have visited all 50 states during his lifetime and many foreign ports of call with the Navy. He had many interests in his life, including sitting beside the campfire with family and friends enjoying side pork, playing cards, and growing kohlrabies. Anyone who knew Harold knew he was especially passionate about the Green Bay Packers. If you missed the game, you could always tell whether they won or lost by the position of the flag in the yard, full or half-mast. Survivors include his wife, Judy, daughters Debbie (Darold) Van Ess, Kim VanDenPlas, grandchildren Darrin Van Ess, Danella (fiancé Dylin Kollross) Van Ess, and Grace VanDenPlas. One brother, Gerald (Florence) LuMaye; two sisters, Sr. Gerald (Angela) LuMaye and Anne Zeimet. Harold is further survived by his mother-in-law Lucille Enz, brother-in-law Lawrence Jandrin, sisters-in-law Sandi LuMaye, Carol Rose, Joanne Stiebs, Lou Ann Spice and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Raymond Marchant, brothers Leo (Delores), Harold, Harry (Vallie), Melvin (Betty), Joseph (Muriel), Norbert (Blanche), Maurice (Jeanne), Lawrence (Joyce), Isadore (Beverly), Bernard (Beverly), August, Cletus (Henry) and James (Pat); sisters Lilly (John Derenne), Louisa Anne, Mary (Lawrence Conard), Nora (Norman Loberger), Mildred Jandrin, Alice (Norbert Willems), Margaret, and Adeline; brothers-in-law Ralph Zeimet, James Rose, Anthony Spice and numerous nieces and nephews.
